Looking at a roof, it's easy to think of it as nothing but shingles. However, there are many components required for proper roofing. Most of these parts sit underneath the shingles, creating a safety net or foundation. Each layer supports the roof in different ways, keeping weather from invading the home. Wilmington roofing experts can help with the installation of these parts.

The first layer of a roof is the wood sheathing used for decking. This decking can be made from polystyrene, concrete or metal. The most common surfaces used, however, are oriented strand board or plywood. Another way to think of decking is as the foundation of the roof. Upon this base, everything else will rest. Roofers nail the decking into specific points in the rafters, as the first step in covering the home.

On top of the decking goes a layer called the underlayment. Starting from the bottom edge of the roof, installers roll this underlayment horizontally across the surface. Most roofs benefit from felt paper. This durable material can shield the home from rainfall. The felt paper is infused with asphalt, making it the perfect complement to the shingles. In the event that a roof's shingles were to break, tear or fall away, this underlayment is the surface that will be shown underneath. When laying down an underlayment, roofers make sure to overlap the sheets.

This is so that water will drip down without penetrating the surface below.

A drip edge goes over the underlayment. Also known as eave flashing, this drip edge is another advantage to stopping water from falling into the home. This component is installed by nailing aluminum strips to specific angles at the roofs base. The drip edge helps the water slide through the gutters, preventing a damaging buildup from forming.

The last step is the installation of the shingles themselves. They can be manufactured from any number of materials such as metal or clay, but the most commonly used shingles are made from asphalt. On top of adding a design to a roof, shingles are the top layer of defense against weather and the outside world.

Other roofing components include a chimney, gutter, downspout, truss, fascia and vent pipe. They are all installed after the shingles are added to the roof.

A roof will have at least four components under the shingles to keep the home safe. What was mentioned are for typical homes; there are more complicated construction options available. Shingles may be the main line of defense, but without a proper sheathing, underlayment and flashing to hold them up, there is no roof to speak of.
